Chiron

This album grew out of a collaboration with the astrologer Daniel Bolaños, developed during 2014 and 2015 through Música de las Estrellas.

Although I created it on the basis of astrological principles, you can experience its beneficial energetic effects without knowing anything about astrology. What matters is the effect that the vibration of the music has on your body, regardless of any knowledge you may have in this or any other field.

If you are familiar with astrology, or at least know something about planets, signs and houses, the album will be very easy to use. If you know your natal chart in depth and follow your transits, solar return, progressions and so on, it may become a kind of musical first-aid kit you return to at many moments in your life.

Chiron in Mythology

The story tells us that the god Chronos fell deeply in love with the Oceanid Philyra, daughter of Oceanus and Tethys. Harassed by Chronos, Philyra asked Zeus to turn her into a mare so that she might escape his advances; Chronos, realising what she had done, transformed himself into a horse and mated with her. From their union Chiron was born, half man and half horse. On seeing him, Philyra asked Zeus to turn her into a linden tree rather than nurse such a creature, and abandoned him.

Chiron grew beneath the shade of that tree, protected by his foster father Apollo. Kind and wise, he became interested in poetry and writing and, above all, in the healing arts, medicine and remedies.

Chiron lived in a cave apart from the other centaurs and maintained good relations with human beings, whom he also taught. Many became his pupils and friends: Achilles, Aeneas, Asclepius, Jason and Aesculapius, among others, listened to his advice and followed his example. One day, however, during the battle of the centaurs, Heracles accidentally wounded one of Chiron’s legs with an arrow poisoned with the venom of the Hydra. The poison was fatal to mortals, but because Chiron was partly divine he could not die, although he could suffer. Despite his vast knowledge of medicine and other sciences, he was unable to heal the wound, which caused him unbearable pain. Unable to find a remedy, he chose to give his immortality to Prometheus, who had sacrificed his life to allow humanity to possess fire. In recognition of Chiron’s achievements, Zeus gave him a place among the stars, turning him into the constellation Centaurus. Chiron’s legacy was the teaching of medicine, justice, integrity and diligence.

Chiron in Astrology

In astrological terms and very broadly speaking, Chiron in the natal chart symbolises what we are able to do for others but struggle to do for ourselves. We may help others achieve their aims while remaining unable to achieve our own in those same areas.

The astrological house in which Chiron is found indicates an area of life in which we may feel wounded, abandoned, insecure or blocked. It can become fertile ground for complexes or insecurities, and for the feeling that our expectations are never fulfilled.

From our perspective, human beings incarnate with a mission, a piece of soul-work to develop. We therefore consider it especially valuable to work with energetic and astrological factors that may become obstacles or difficulties in approaching that mission as fully as possible. In this sense, Chiron is a fundamental touchstone in anyone’s inner work because it reaches into those areas where we feel orphaned, insecure or abandoned. In our view, these feelings arise from the human illusion of separation from the Whole, the Core, the Source, Being, the Great Spirit — or whatever name each person chooses to give it. That separation is a human conceptual illusion: in reality, we are all part of the same vibrational field and have never been separated from the Source. As we work through these human ‘illusions’, their hold on our awareness gradually diminishes and we become increasingly conscious, through feeling, experience and direct recognition, that separation does not exist.

Our proposal

Our musical and astrological proposal follows this direction. The compositions are designed to draw each Chiron towards its own essence rather than towards its wound. The process is one of cleansing the wound while the Teacher begins to emerge and take form. It is the hero’s journey inward, until we become fully aware that what matters is the journey itself, the mastery we gradually acquire, and the recognition that there is no true separation, abandonment, lack of ability or lack of worth.

The album presents the great Teacher Chiron in each of the signs and houses of the zodiacal mandala. Each track allows you to work with the sign and house in which Chiron is found, as well as with the astrological aspects Chiron forms within the natal chart or through planetary transits.

None of the tracks is intended exclusively for people with a particular astrological placement. We all have a first house in our natal chart, even if Chiron is not there, so I encourage you to listen regardless of Chiron’s position and observe which feelings, thoughts, physical sensations and other responses begin to move within you. You may notice something gradually transforming as you move towards a more authentic expression of your own self.
