Amnesia

Amnesia, 2020.

Amnesia is a short film about Cosmos, a high-powered executive who jumps from a cliff into the sea and loses his memory. Searching for his past and for a way to overcome his fear of water, he turns to Casandra, an unusual psychologist who uses clairvoyance in an attempt to help him. What Casandra sees through crystal gazing leads her not to reveal Cosmos’s past, but instead to propose a new future far removed from his former life. Her suggestion initially unsettles him, yet he follows her advice with unexpectedly positive results.

Amnesia explores trauma, memory loss and renewed trust in life through two ‘blows’ that act as turning points towards a new path, one literal and the other metaphorical, arranged in a symmetrical, polarised structure. The first is Cosmos’s fall into the water, a metaphor for a turbulent emotional world, followed by amnesia; the second is a stroke of luck when he wins a game of chance, prompting the journey he chooses to make towards a new life with a renewed mind. The film follows a symmetrical pattern: blow in the sea (descent), call to secretary–home, window–home, consultation with flashback and flash-forward, window–car, call to secretary–car, airport (ascent), with the consultation forming the central axis around which the action turns.
